Eight

Branding: NGO providing basic income to African villages

Eight provides unconditional monthly cash transfers to people in extreme poverty for two years. Eight demonstrated in a pilot project - which ran from January 2017 to January 2019 - that it is possible to give money directly to people in poverty without relying on large institutions or large budgets. Simple cell phones, mobile money and the support of a small but committed group of entrepreneurs and effective altruists made this possible.

Jacques Bernoulli (1654-1705) was a Swiss mathematician who in 1694 studied the “flat eight” - the lemniscate - as a mathematical formula. The Eight logo resembles the shape created by the ratio of two circles of identical diameter and the lemniscate. To build upon that, we've added an extra circle. So three circles are a visual build on what Eight has already achieved.

Then, to return to the lemniscate idea of endlessness, we left out parts of the outline. The “flat 8” feel is subtle, but it's there - and the way the circles stack together conveys the idea of building a brighter future (and building out Eight).
